History

Records are available that show Ryhope Colliery Welfare CC were playing competitive cricket in 1877 against Houghton Colliery Welfare CC.

In 1920 they were members of the North East Durham League becoming League Champions in 1922.

1925 saw the formation of the Durham Coast Cricket League. of which Ryhope were founder members. Minutes record a meeting held in the Colliery Office on Wednesday 17th February 1926 with T.A.Mackay Esq. in the chair. It was agreed to construct a 18hole putting course around the cricket square.

During the 80's Ryhope were League winners on no fewer than 6 occasions and more recently have developed very successful junior teams.

A recent Ryhope junior cricketer who has gone on to play professional football is Alan Tate formerly Man Utd's 'young player of the year' and today playing for Swansea City.

Ryhope at this present time have 9 level 2 coaches, delivering sessions to junior players each night except Mondays and match days.

School Links

The club is ‘linked’ to the Venerable Bede school in Ryhope.
