History

Murton’s cricket history can be traced back to 1898 when they were members and playing in the North East Durham League at the Fatten Pasture ground. winning the League title in 1923.

In 1928 the club moved together with other sporting clubs, [football, tennis, bowls,] to brand new facilities based within the Welfare Grounds. By the early 1930s Murton had become members of the Durham Coast League and remained there until membership of the Durham County League was gained in the early 50s.

The 18th May 1963 was a significant day in the history of Murton Cricket Club, playing a fixture against Newton Aycliffe CC they were all out for 1 run, [ c.brammer] this is still believed to be a record in any competitive cricket, not only locally, but nationally.

A return to the North East Durham league followed in the late 60s early 70s.

By 1980, they had returned to the Durham Coast League, winning League titles in 2003/04/06/07.
