History

Houghton Colliery Welfare was founded by the management of Houghton Colliery in a project to utilize the sports complex grounds, situtated adjacent to the Miners Wefare Hall. Funding to develop the site was financed by the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation.

Initially the club joined the Mid Durham Senior League in 1961, then became members of the North East Durham League in 1965.

In 1976 it was necessary to re-locate to Harraton Cricket Ground whilst Sunderland Council commenced developing the Leyburn Grove Sports Complex, which was completed and opened in 1988. The opening of this facility coincided with the club becoming members of the Durham Coast Cricket League.

In 2006 the club applied and became members of the North East Durham League where the play today.
