History

The club was founded in 1904 by brewery tycoon William John Nimmo, who later became Durham County Cricket Club Chairman from 1925-1936. Brewery staff formed a major part of the team including it’s present Chairman Hughie Teesdale.

Brewery Director Rudd Alderson made 30 appearances for Durham County and also played rugby for the Barbarians.

Durham cricket legend Stuart Young claimed 348 wickets in 115 County appearances and top scored with 129. He also played for Warwickshire.

Two stalwarts of Castle Eden CC are Hughie Teesdale and Leo Taylor having 100 years of unbroken service between them.

The club has played in a number of local leagues, commencing with the Durham Coast League, then spending some years in the North Yorkshire South Durham League. Following a short spell in the Cleveland League the club once more became members of the Durham Coast League in 1997.

The junior section was formed in 1996 and now operate sides at under 11s/13s/15s/18s. and have been successful at County and Regional levels.

The club have an excellent working relationship with Wellfield Comprehensive School.

Coaching

Takes place on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the winter months at Wellfield School, during the Summer, coaching sessions are available at the ground each Wednesday evening from 6pm.

Currently working towards the Clubmark award.

Club News

A ‘Race Night’ fund raiser will be held in the Fir Tree Pub, Wingate on April 11th Cost of ticket £2.50 including a hot supper. All proceeds will be used to help finance the Summer Tour to Hampshire. Tickets are available from all Junior Committee members. First race 8.00pm
